List three jobs you’d consider pursuing if money didn’t matter.
Tough question here – but one that I have actually given some thought to.
First – the one I currently have – Director of HR at a mid-sized law firm. Why? Because I absolutely love it. This role has the right mix of challenge, impact and novelty. It keeps me interested and engaged. I am able to help the shareholders do better for the firm, the employees and the community. In short, I make a difference. When I worked in Fortune 20, that wasn’t always the case – or it wasn’t obvious when it was. Plus, in corporate, you were always only as good as your last success or failure. Sure, they talk a good game, and fifteen or twenty years ago, they actually put their money where their mouth is, but in this cutthroat world – it’s all a race to the bottom. Maybe those earlier in their careers can make mistakes – it’s less forgiving when you’ve been there for a while, even in a new discipline.
Second – I’d run a foundation of some sort. I’d like to support causes that have mattered to me in my life, where I noticed gaps to be filled. My one daughter has special needs and while living in a group home, it really isn’t set up to support her in a way that gives her the independence she craves and the safety she deserves (and we want for her). I also see a need to help people find jobs after tough times in their lives – moments of transitions – similar to why I wrote the blog, but for this, I am thinking even more dire; think people leaving prison, recovering addicts, mentally ill. I think my background in HR and business is one that could really help these folks find good homes to work.
Third – I mean if money were no object, then I may as well declare myself a pro golfer and play every day. If money is no object, I don’t need to win or have sponsors or worry about paying greens fees to play or to feed my family and pay bills. For that matter, I could have two jobs – I would be a pro fisherman as well. Maybe a fishing guide like my friends at Scenic City Fishing! https://www.sceniccityfishing.com/
